Map of Peru
Janssonius, Johannes / Hondius jr., Jodocus
Title Leupe: Kaart van Peru.
This map of Peru is part of Janssonius Jr.’s print of the Mercator/Hondius Atlas which is also known as “Atlas Novus”. In his attempt to rivel with Blaeu’s “Atlas Maior”, Janssonius added numerous prints to the atlas after 1633. While many maps resembled those of Blaeu, Janssonius kept his own trademarks which are visible on this map too. The decorative title cartouche is typical for instance. Important cities, rivers and mountains are all depicted and this topographical information is likely derived from the crew of Jacques l'Hermite who had sailed to the Peruvian port Callao in 1624 to perish there from dysentery and scurvy. His Nassau Fleet returned to the Dutch Republic two years later with a wealth of information on the region. The sea is decorated with ships and sea monsters.
Scale-bar of 120 German Miles = 130 ‘strepen’.
