This maps was produced in connection with the major slave uprising of 1763 that took place in Berbice and the recapturing of the colony from the rebels in the following year, executed by the expeditionary corps sent out from the Republic and led by Colonel Jan Marius de Salve. This anonymous survey shows the situation in 1764 and gives a glance at the planned expeditions against the remaining rebels.
The five military posts which will be used for the expedition are also depicted and mentioned in the index on the left side of the map.
The cartographer did not use a scale-bar on purpose because he aims to only give an overview of the situation. This copperplate print shows the map reached a wider audience.
VEL1653 is the manuscript version of this map. For this print the original colours were replaced with dots and the size was decreased.
